My name is Nicole Elizabeth Martin. I'm 27. I am married to Josh Martin. We have the cutest baby boy in the world. His name is Jack Dexter. I have degrees in vocal music performance and broadcasting and cinematic arts from Central Michigan University. I suck at cooking, spelling, playing the clarinet and learning foreign languages. So don't ask me to do those things.
Other than that I'm awesome. |
Hanes use cotton from Uzbekistan, which is not only the world’s second largest producer of cotton, but also one of the biggest exploiters of children in the industry. No more grannies panties for me.
WHAT DO THESE COMPANIES HAVE IN COMMON? They were just inducted into the International Labor Rights Forum 2010 Sweatshop Hall of Shame.
Sweatshop labor PREVENTS CHILDREN FROM GOING TO SCHOOL. Children as young as seven are repeating the cycle of illiteracy and hopelessness to make my stupid tank tops and underwear. I’m floored, I put trust in some companies, you know? Blind trust is no longer enough.
ONE IN SIX CHILDREN IN THE WORLD ARE ENGAGED IN CHILD LABOR.

Great. Now I feel like shit that my entire house is furnished by IKEA. Guess that puts an end to that. And sorry Wal-Mart… gonna be sure to do my shopping at Meijer now (BTW, I STILL don’t buy things made by Procter and Gamble, Cover Girl, or use Tide laundry detergent because in like 6th grade Jillian told me that those companies test on animals)
Yesterday my Wii came. It was ordered from dell.com and delivered by UPS. No signature needed, it was on my doorstep when I came home.
Today, my Beatles Rock Band bundle was to be delivered. It was ordered from dell.com and delivered by UPS. Apparently, I need to sign for it so I only got a note on my door saying I have to sign.
What gives?
Also, FedEx delivered my John Lennon guitar controller without signing for it. As excited as I am by the fact that it’s here, I can’t do anything with it without the game bundle…
What makes it so that you have to sign for a package rather than them being able to leave it?
A lot of times it’s at the whim of the delivery man. My guess is that the Wii was supposed to have a signiture, but the first UPS guy forged it and left it for you figuring you wouldn’t mind because it would be easier for the both of you.
Other times, delivery guys say you need a signiture when you really don’t. I had that happen to me once. My delivery was two tickets to a Red Wings game that I had overnighted to me so they’d arrive Saturday (the game was on Sunday) I knew I’d be at work so I intentionally made sure I DIDN’T need a signiture. When I got home from work, instead of the tickets was a signiture needed note from the post office, which was already closed. I called and there was someone still there and I made them re-open so I could get them since it was their fault.
Sometimes I can be a real class act.
After finishing “Devil in the White City” last night, I decided to continue not only with the true crime theme, but also with the Chicago setting and started Public Enemies: America’s Greatest Crime Wave and the Birth of the FBI. It’s what the movie “Public Enemies” with Johnny Depp is based on, which I’ve never seen, thank goodness (I hate seeing a movie before I’ve read the book). So far I love the way it’s written. Looking forward to getting into the meat of it. Dillinger’s story is especially intruiging to me given his ties to the U.P, inculding the place where Josh and I got married.

They are SO good. Check out their other stuff on Youtube.
Just finishing this up. It was recommended to me by the owner of the used book store I frequently go to. It was by far one of the most interesting books I’ve ever read. It’s incredible how much the Chicago World’s Fair shaped the future of America in so many different little ways. For being non-fiction, it was certainly suspensful and never dry. For anyone interested in historical non-fiction/fiction, especially someone who is familiar with Chicago, I would definitely recommend this.
